The New Units are Here!

I’ve spent the last two weekends nursing my cold, and occasionally planning for new grade level units (less time was spent on the later, trust me). Here is what I have planned:

Second Grade – Fossils

Another animal based unit. My planning for that unit can be found here. Below are what I’m giving the kids for goals:

Third Grade – Money

This unit is repeated in the second unit of fourth grade, so I want them to get a good base of that. My planning for that unit can be found here. Below are what I’m giving the kids for goals:

Fourth Grade – Survival

Grade4Unit4Goals

This unit is focused largely on surviving natural disasters in their text. I decided to go with a natural selection and environmental dangers approach. I have wanted to put more focus on survival skills for everyday life, since these kids are hit with a lot. I may implement that more next year. My planning for that unit can be found here. Below are what I’m giving the kids for goals:

Fifth Grade – Blogging

This grade level has asked me to have students work on preparing for the upcoming testing season by brushing up on a few standards using the ILS (integrated learning system) purchased by our district. Needless to say, I’m not crazy about this, but the teachers feel like their backs are against the wall, with a 40+% pass rate to meet AYP goals. I’ve decided rather than doing a thematic unit based on their language arts text to have them start blogging with other classes (the teachers have agreed students need not spend the entire 45 minute period on the ILS). Here is the planner, and the goals are below:

Sixth Grade – Blogging

This unit is focused on music, and one of the teachers traditionally has the kids do a report on their favorite musician/recording artists. I’m not always crazy about how “recall oriented” this task becomes, so I’m trying to get the kids to understand both elements and genres of music, so they can express their choices in those terms. My planning for that unit can be found here. Below are what I’m giving the kids for goals:
